The gothic architecture hiding in your engagement ring

I mentioned in the video that modern trends push for "invisible" metal, where the diamond looks like it’s just floating on a wire.

In the jewellery industry, we call this a Peg Head. And chain stores absolutely love them. Not because they are structurally sound, but because they are cheap to manufacture.

A peg head is completely modular. A factory can mass-produce thousands of plain, thin bands, and keep a drawer full of different-sized baskets. When you pick a stone, a jeweller simply drills a hole in the band and solders the peg into it. It takes five minutes.

A Cathedral Setting, on the other hand, usually requires the ring to be designed, modelled, and cast as a single, cohesive piece of architecture.

When a brand tells you a floating diamond is "minimalist," they are often just selling you a modular, mass-produced shortcut. Don't let them convince you that a weaker ring is a premium feature.
