RESCUING MACAWS FROM WILDFIRES IN IBERÁ
In Cambyretá in northern Iberá, Argentina, where we are reintroducing the red-and-green macaw, four chicks are now being raised by their parents with our team’s help.
The current wildfires in Iberá and the smoke threaten the macaws’ nest boxes. For that reason, we removed the macaws and took them to a safe place in Aguara Rescue Center in Corrientes until the situation in Iberá improves.
Once the wildfires are over, the red-and-green macaw and other birds will contribute to regenerating the vegetation by consuming and dispersing seeds—this species’ central ecological role.
Fire is a natural and necessary element to sustain health and richness in these grasslands. However, the current wildfires are unusual in quantity, affected area, and intensity. Primary causes include extended droughts and high temperatures resulting from global climate change. Additionally, the mismanagement of prescribed burns for cattle production and burning litter out in the open worsen the situation.
These events will continue to occur if we don’t change how we produce energy and food and our consumption habits. Further, these catastrophes will continue if we don’t act to reverse them. Rewilding projects are key allies: healthy and functional ecosystems are more resilient and recover better and sooner after events like this one.
