Have you ever wondered how your hot water tank works? In this video we'll give you a brief overview of how they operate.

Hello, everybody. Steve here from Furnace USA. And, let's talk about for a moment what is the basic functionality of hot water tank. What does it do?
Well, you know what it does. It puts hot water in your house, but what's going on with these controls on the side of it? What's going on with the basic functionality of it?
The top of it's real basic. Cold water comes in. The cold water actually doesn't come in the top of the tank. The cold water actually pushes down all the way to the bottom and comes out somewhere around there. It gives you a couple of benefits. If the cold water was to just come in the top, it doesn't mix very well. So, if it comes in the bottom, it does two things. It stirs up the sediment in the bottom, so it doesn't just build up in the bottom of your tank. That's more of a newer tank technology, and the other thing is, it doesn't just basically come in cold water and then go right back out the same pipe. It forces it to kind of mix together through the whole entire tank.
The inside of the tank is pretty simple. So, all that you're looking at there, this is actually the outer shell. So, there's actually two layers. So, you have the outer shell, you have the insulation, and then you have just a middle tank with a glass coating on it basically making it so it doesn't rust, but that's also the problem with tanks. So, when the glass sort of wears away, and the glass gets eaten away a little bit, it's nothing left for the tank to basically protect itself from being rusted away and then a hole jumps out outside of itself, which doesn't seem terribly fair. Why don't we just make tanks out of materials that can't rust? I don't know.
So, another little thing, this little tube that you see coming down the side of it, what it does is a temperature and pressure relief valve, so if the pressure gets too high inside the tank, or the temperature gets too high, this thing will actually release, and drop water at the bottom. So, usually, if those things are going off, it's because the part's faulty, but sometimes it can be caused by other things, like too high pressure in a house, problems with the plumbing system, problems from the street causing too high of pressure in your home, system push back in your house, all sorts of that kind of stuff.
Obviously, you have the gas line coming in. That's for that. All that's really happening here is a temperature probe going into the tank, and that's just sensing temperature. So, when the temperature inside the tank, it drops below a certain temperature, which you can adjust on here, it just makes the furnace fire up, and inside of there, all that you're looking at is a little cylinder and the gas flows through, and it hits the bottom of this metal plate. On the other side of that metal plate is all of the water inside the tank.
So, obviously the door is not much to look at, but it's just a gas pipe going in, it's a metal pipe, then a little window inside of there that, if you look through it, you can see your little tiny pilot burning.
Just gonna put down on this tank to track the pilot, push the button down, click it, always click it a few times. There's no harm in that click, click, click. Release it, turn it back to on, make sure you set it right, and there you are. Yep, that's it.
Steve here from Furnace USA, thank you for watching today, and we'll talk again soon.
