Zen Garden at Higashi Honganji Temple (Shosei-en Garden), Kyoto City

Shosei-en Garden is part of the Higashi Hongnji Temple. Higashi Honganji Temple belongs to the Otani branch of the Jodo Shin sect of Japanese Buddhism. It is located a few minutes walk from the JR Kyoto Station and right opposite to the Higashi Honganji Temple itself.

This garden was first built in the Heian era and went through many restorations because of war and fires, the last grand restoration was done in the Meiji era, in the late nineteenth century. Because of the restorations done to this garden through many eras of Japanese history, it picked up many nuances of the garden styles from Heian era to the Meiji era. Enjoy!!!
