Is Moderate Alcohol Consumption Actually Healthy?

The long-standing belief that moderate alcohol intake, especially red wine, is beneficial has been thoroughly debunked by recent research. A 2023 systematic review found that early studies showing benefits were flawed due to abstainer bias—non-drinkers in these studies often had preexisting health issues, skewing the results. Once adjusted for this, any supposed benefits of drinking disappeared. Instead, risk of all-cause mortality remained the same for occasional drinkers, began increasing at low intake, and rose significantly with higher alcohol consumption, showing that no amount of alcohol is truly beneficial for health.
