Lecture 6: Creating a Simplicial Complex from Data
A series of preparatory lectures for a math course "Topics in Topology: Scientific and Engineering Applications of Algebraic Topology," offered Fall 2013 through the University of Iowa Division of Continuing Education. For more information see http://www.math.uiowa.edu/~idarcy/AppliedTopology.html
Lecture 5 can be found at http://youtu.be/9vLAZkOk3IA
Lecture 7 will be available in about a week
The complete list of preparatory lectures plus additional links can be found at http://homepage.math.uiowa.edu/~idarcy/AT/prelectures.html
The article referenced in slide 3 is
P. Y. Lum, G. Singh, A. Lehman, T. Ishkanov, M. Vejdemo-Johansson, M. Alagappan, J. Carlsson & G. Carlsson, Extracting insights from the shape of complex data using topology, Scientific Reports 3, February 2013. It is available at http://www.nature.com/srep/2013/130207/srep01236/full/srep01236.html
FYI (optional info): The protein I mentioned during slide 5 is ubiquitin hydrolase. It is a protein that occurs in your brain and contains a local 5 crossing knot. For more info see:
Virnau P, Mirny LA, Kardar M (2006) Intricate Knots in Proteins: Function and Evolution. PLoS Comput Biol 2(9), http://www.ploscompbiol.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pcbi.0020122
