Sections, Directions and Parts of a Pirate Ship

This is an instructional video taking you through the various sections, compartments or parts of a ship. A great resource for writers, or just anyone wishing to learn about ships. Below you'll find a glossary of all the terms I used, and some I forgot.

DIRECTIONS
Fore, Bow: Front of the ship
Stern, aft: Back of the ship
Port/larboard: left
Starboard: right
Afore/ahead: forward
Astern: behind
Aloft: up
Alow: down
SUPERSTRUCTURE
Keel: The bottom-most longitudinal part of the ship. Keeps balance.
Rib: The ship's skeleton built above the keel.
Hull: The framework or flesh built around the rib.
Bulkwall: Walls inside a ship.
Gunwale: Railings on a ship.
Bilge: Bottom-most section of a ship. Also referred to the water that gathers here.
Ballast: Extra weight, like stones, stored at the bottom for extra balance.
Hold: The cargo compartment above the bilge.
Magazine: A room in the front of the hold for storing powder and shot.

Orlop: A deck above the hold where the cordage is stored.
Caboose: Ship's kitchen aboard merchant ships. Either located in the middle of the ship(in the hold or maindeck), or in the forecastle.
Galley: Same as caboose but aboard Warships.
During the 1600s, the ship's kitchen was called the "Cook-room".
Gundeck: A deck mounted with cannons. Big ships have 1 or more, small ships usually only have cannons on the main deck.
TOP MIDDLE

Maindeck: The uppermost deck of the ship.
Flush deck: A main deck that is continuous from stem to stern.
Gangway: If the ship has an open main deck leading straight to the gundeck, gangways are the passageways located along the sides of this hole, connecting the ship's back and front.
Hatch: Used for going down through the decks.
TOP FRONT
Stem: The front of the keel, curls upwards.

Forecastle/Fo'c'sle: A raised section in the ship's front. If the ship lacks a raised frontal section it may refer to a room somewhere in the ship's front. The crew typically sleep in said room.
Beakhead: The foremost platform of the bow.
Anchor: A large weight dropped and hooked into the bottom of the sea to secure the ship.
Cathead: A protruding beam used to support the anchor.
Windlass: A horizontal device used to multiply a sailor's pulling force.

Capstan: A vertical device used to multiply a sailor's pulling force.
TOP BACK
Aftercastle: A raised section in the back of the ship. Houses the cabins etc.
Quarterdeck: A raised deck just behind the maindeck.
Rudder: Connected to the back of the keel. Used for changing the ship's direction.

Tiller: A simple pole used to direct the rudder.

Whipstaff: A lever used to direct the rudder.

Ship's Wheel: A complex wheel used to direct the rudder.
Officer's Quarters: Where the officers live. Located below the quarterdeck.
Captain's Quarters: Captain's cabin. Located behind the officer's.

Poop deck: The roof of the Captain's quarters.

Taffrail: The rail at the ship's back.
RIGGING:
Spar: A wooden pole used to support rigging.
Boom: A spar at the foot of a sail.
Halyard: A line used to hoist sails or flags.

Bowsprit: The spar jutting out of the ship's fore.
Mast: A vertical spar placed along the keel.

Sprit Topmast: A mast placed on the bowsprit.
Foremast: The foremost mast.
Mainmast: The middle and biggest mast.
Mizzenmast: Third mast.
Jiggermast: A fourth mast, provided the ship got one.
Fighting top: Platform in the middle of the mast, mounted with gunners during combat.
Crow's nest: A lookout's platform at the top of a mast.
Shroud: Standing rope used to stabilize the masts.

Ratline: Pronounced 'ratlinn'. Ropes between the shrouds, creating a ladder for climbing up into the rigging.
