The KGB was the main security agency of the Soviet Union from 13 March 1954 until 3 December 1991. It was the chief government agency, carrying out internal security, intelligence and secret police functions. As a direct successor of preceding agencies such as the Cheka, GPU, OGPU, NKGB, NKVD and MGB, it was attached to the Council of Ministers.
The agency was a military service governed by army laws and regulations, in the same fashion as the Soviet Army or the MVD Internal Troops.

КГБ - главный орган обеспечения гос. безопасности Советского Союза с 13 марта 1954 года по 3 декабря 1991 года. Это был главный государственный орган, выполнявший функции обеспечения внутренней безопасности, разведки и тайной полиции. Являясь прямым преемником ВЧК, ГПУ, ОГПУ, НКГБ, НКВД и МГБ, был прикреплен к Совету Министров.
Комитет представлял собой военизированную организацию, подчинявшуюся армейским уставам и правилам, подобно Советской Армии или Внутренним войскам МВД.
