🍳 Breakfast at Bill’s & 🏰 Scotney Castle Tour | Fields, Ruins & Hidden Secrets! 🇬🇧✨

Welcome back to another adventure with Steven & Elaine from S&E Adventures! Today’s video is a perfect mix of cozy English breakfast traditions, historic castles, charming ruins, and a little unexpected twist involving… a parking ticket. Join us as we explore the beauty and history of Kent, starting with brunch and ending with a castle frozen in time.

Breakfast at Bill’s
We kick things off at Bill’s Restaurant, a popular spot for hearty English breakfasts. As is our tradition, we split a full English breakfast in our own way. Steven digs into eggs, sausage, bacon, and toast, while Elaine enjoys black pudding, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, and baked beans. It’s the perfect balance, and of course, no English breakfast is complete without tea for two to finish it off. There’s something timeless about starting a day of exploring with a comforting meal like this—it sets the tone for the entire adventure.

The Parking Mishap
Next, we make our way to Scotney Castle, but not without a hiccup. Parking in a new country can be tricky, and this time we ended up with an unwelcome souvenir: a parking ticket. Not ideal, but all part of the travel experience! We laugh it off, get in the car, and continue the day with excitement for what’s ahead.

Arrival at Scotney Castle
Arriving at the property, we take a quick peek inside the bookshop before the tour begins. Unfortunately, Scout (our furry travel companion) isn’t allowed inside because the shop has a resident kitty, so he patiently waits outside while we browse. With books in hand and curiosity piqued, it’s time for the castle tour.

Guided Castle & Grounds Tour
Our guide is incredibly knowledgeable, walking us through the grounds, history, and fascinating stories that bring Scotney Castle to life. Surrounded by lush gardens, rolling fields, and breathtaking views, it’s easy to see why this castle has captivated visitors for centuries.

A Home Frozen in Time
The manor itself feels like stepping straight into the past. Rooms are preserved exactly as they were, beautifully decorated with period details. Every corner tells a story, from antique furniture to family heirlooms. Walking through these halls feels less like visiting a museum and more like peeking into someone’s home, untouched by time.

Exploring the Old Castle & Ruins
After the manor, we head to the original castle ruins. Once a stronghold, much of the stone was later recycled to build the new manor house. The ruins still stand as a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the past. Here, history becomes tangible.

One of the most fascinating parts of Scotney’s story is tied to its role in the English Reformation. Thomas Darrell, owner of the castle during the late 1500s, secretly harbored a Catholic priest when Catholicism was outlawed. Between 1591–1598, a priest lived hidden in a secret chamber inside the castle. Today, visitors can still see this chamber, cleverly concealed behind a cupboard door built into the stairwell—a remarkable piece of history you can witness firsthand.

Why Scotney Castle is Worth Visiting
Scotney Castle isn’t just about architecture—it’s about stories, secrets, and survival. From grand gardens and sweeping fields to secret chambers and recycled ruins, it embodies centuries of English history in one remarkable location. Whether you come for the picturesque landscapes, the preserved manor interiors, or the mysterious tales of hidden priests, Scotney offers something unforgettable for everyone.

We have been working and traveling the world together since 2016. We have decided to "risk it all"! We quit our jobs, sold our cars and are hoping to 'live like locals' as vagabonds traveling the world. To record and share our experiences with family & friends we are creating these short videos from our travels. We hope you enjoy!
