Murder Holes In Castles - Brutal Medieval Warfare

During the Medieval Period, castles were huge centres of life and power. However during times of conflict or war, they could regularly find themselves attacked or facing an invading army. Guards would be stationed within the castle to help protect the fortification. However one of the most brutal ways of defending a castle was also one of its most effective.

Murder Holes were built into the gateways of castles or near entrances to allow guards and defenders to rain down hell onto an enemy. These holes in this area would be where guards could fire arrows down on trapped enemies, or throw burning hot oil, water or sand to bring horror to the enemy. The gatehouse could allow an enemy to become trapped within it, and the murder holes would allow the defenders to attack in relative safety.
