London's CORRUPT Medieval Red Light District - The Liberty Of The Clink

During the Medieval period, a part of London would develop a reputation for being a seedy and dirty area embroiled in prostitution and crime. The Liberty of the Clink was an area set up on the South Bank of the River Thames in which was owned and overseen by the Bishop of Winchester. It gets its name famously from the Clink prison which became notorious during the Tudor period for suffering. The Bishop preceded over the area and would profit financially from the misdemeanours and ill-behaviour that would occur.

The Liberty of the Clink throughout the Medieval period would make the Catholic Bishop of Winchester very rich, and he would basically be profiteering off the back of prostitution as fees were paid to him and he would license brothels or stewhouses as they were known. Today the area is known as Southwark and is rather trendy. Where today bars line the River bank and near to where Shakespeare's Globe stands, these illicit trades would be ployed.

The whole story of London's corrupt medieval 'Red Light District' is a rather sad one and features the stories of those women who were forced to ply their trade there. Even though the Bishop and even the King of England would profit from this trade, it wasn't illegal and the girls after death were thrown and buried in mass pit graves on unconsecrated ground. Today this is known as the 'Crossbones Cemetry, or Crossbones Gardens.'

The women of the Liberty of the Clink are today forgotten and very little remains to tell their story. So join us today as we look at the Liberty of the Clink, London's Corrupt Medieval Red Light District.
