The Story of Pokhran is not just about a nuclear test, it is about a nation's defiance to its oppressors. To become a nuclear power India had to fight long and hard. It was not enough just to have the ability to create nuclear bombs, India had to fight off the CIA and international pressure. After homi Jahangir Bhabha passed away, it was time for Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to take on the challenge. Similarly after the days of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi was over it was Sri Atal Bihari Vajpayee who gave the nuclear program the much needed backing. After operation Smiling Buddha of 1974, it was time for Operation Shakti in 1998. When prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced what India had done in the Pokhran Range, the CIA knew what the light earthquake in Rajasthan meant. But they could not understand how did India made fool of the world's biggest intelligence agency, because the CIA failed spectacularly in this case. All they could do is to make president Clinton issue some warnings and impose some economic restrictions which didn't amount to anything.
Thus India had won the battle of being a nuclear power nation on its own terms.
