HOW SHOULD YOU POSITION YOUR LEAD FOOT?

The joints of our body make up a big chain. When it comes to being able to rotate the lower body through into the finish, there is a lot of rotational demand placed on the lead hip and some on the lead ankle. The knee, being a hinge joint (flexion/extension) like the elbow, doesn‘t have a responsibility to rotate.

The position of the lead foot as far as whether it is straight, or flared (rotated towards target), directly influences the lead hip and therefore how far your pelvis will be able to travel rotationally.

Most adults are slightly restricted in their hip internal rotation. Therefore, if they keep their lead foot straight, they will either struggle to turn their lead side through impact, or need to roll the ankle like crazy to get the range of motion.

For this reason, amongst a few others, I am a proponent of having some foot flare to make it easier to rotate and take a lot of pressure off the lead ankle and knee.

Try this out and let me know how it goes!
