I decided to do this piece with my travel set-up as if I was standing and painting on location. For me, this means working quickly and using a minimum of materials and tools.

My Paint Palette is simply the tray from a package of gum. It is attached with two sided tape.
The paper used for mixing is a piece of scrap watercolor paper.
The mixing tray is the packaging from a suitcase travel lock. Ingenuity when away from home.

My papers of choice include Arches and Fabriano 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
