How Do I Clean My Water Softener?

Cleaning your water softener is part of the regular maintenance needed to keep your system running efficiently. Additionally, you can often extend your manufacturer warranty with regular cleanings—usually every four months, but it’s important to read your system’s instructions to determine what the manufacturer recommends.

It’s best to clean your unit before going to bed or another time when you know you won’t be using the water for a few hours.

To clean, open the water softener cover and make sure that the tank is less than half-full of salt. Locate the brine well covered by a 3” diameter cap. Remove the cap and fill the brine well with 16 oz. of your water softener brand’s cleaner. Re-cap the brine well and close the softener. Press the recharge button for three seconds and then wait two hours before using the water again. When you do, the water softener will be ready to provide soft water to your home.
