Part of keeping your water softener running efficiently is adding salt to help the system regenerate. But what kind of salt? And how much is needed?

Softener salt comes in three forms: evaporated salt, rock salt and solar salt. Evaporated salt is considered the best option as it is less likely to form salt bridges. Try to pick out salt with the highest composition of sodium chloride or potassium chloride.

Once you have your system’s salt selected, make sure to check on salt levels every four weeks. Open your system’s brine tank lid to assess the salt level—a good rule to follow is to keep it filled halfway with salt.
