Diamond Plate Aluminum Led Sign

I have been playing with cutting aluminum with my scroll saw lately.

• So Here’s a few wind spinners I made first then worked my way up to a led lit sign for my shop.

• I decide to make the sign 20” long and 3” high and using red led flexible strips to light up behind the lettering.
• After finding a font I liked I designed the sign and spacing using my sign software and sent it to my vinyl cutter.
• For the led shop sign I started out with a sheet of diamond plate aluminum and a piece of ¼” Masonite.
• I rough cut the Masonite to be larger than the sheet of diamond plate aluminum. This allows for the scroll saw to always be cutting both the Masonite and aluminum at the same time.
• I start by spraying both the pieces with spray adhesive then stick them together making sure that they are stuck tight around all the surface area.
• If you have a spot where you are cutting just the aluminum it will jump all over the place so having them both stuck together is essential.
• Then I take the stencil I made from the vinyl cutter,apply it to the diamond plate and then cover the aluminum with stencil with clear packing tape. The vinyl sticks fine but the clear tape, it helps lubricate the blade. I am thinking after cutting several of the wind spinners the spray adhesive helps lubricate the blade too.
• After I cut the letters on the scroll saw I had to clean off the spray adhesive and vinyl.
• Now moving on to the light bar that will be used to light behind the letters I cut a pice of wood 1” x 19” and covered it with a piece of brushed aluminum I had previously made.
• The led strips already are self adhesive so I just cut them to length and stuck them to the wood.
• After that’s all said and done I took the same spray adhesive I used earlier and stuck the letters onto the light bar.
• As you can see it lights up pretty good and the diamond plate aluminum looks pretty cool when the natural light hits it.
• It was simple project once I figured out the process total cost was around $10 bucks and took me about three hours to do.
