Marape Slams Bureaucrats Over Fuel Payment Delays

With fuel pumps running dry across Port Moresby and many stations shutting down, Prime Minister James Marape has demanded swift action to resolve outstanding fuel subsidy payments, stating that bureaucratic delays will no longer be excused.

This morning, the Prime Minister disclosed that K576 million is still held in a Central Bank trust account for fuel subsidies, while K246 million has already been released to importers.
“We have K576 million sitting in the Central Bank trust account right now, and K246 million has already been paid,” Mr. Marape said.
“This inefficiency lies with the bureaucrats – Treasury, Finance, ICCC, and the Central Bank.”

Mr. Marape said he is looking into why payments have been stalled amid the supply disruption, warning that officials who fail to act could lose their jobs.
“I am getting to the bottom of this – it’s below government level why they haven’t responded to this national crisis,” he said.
“The government has done its part. We created the policy, made a K1 billion facility available, and the funds are sitting at the Central Bank. I want to know why they aren’t being moved. If that means firing people who aren’t working, we will fire them.”

The government has already disbursed K300 million from the K1 billion facility intended to keep fuel prices at April 2026 levels. The measure aims to protect consumers from price hikes, but operational holdups have forced several service stations to close.

“I have directed the relevant offices to handle this matter today and bring supply back to normal,” the Prime Minister said. “We are fixing what went wrong in the supply chain.”

He praised Minister for Rural and Economic Development, Hon. Joseph Lelang, for leading the early response, along with the Treasury and Finance Ministers, to coordinate with stakeholders. “Fuel supply has many moving parts,” he noted.
“Treasury, Finance, the Central Bank, commercial banks, ICCC, fuel importers, and retailers must work together to deliver on government policy and ensure steady supply to the public.”

Mr. Marape appealed for public patience while authorities work to restore normal operations.
“We ask the public to bear with us today as we resolve this issue and get services back up,” he said.

The government reiterated its commitment to stable fuel prices and uninterrupted supply through coordinated action across all agencies.
