House Passes 'Take It Down' Act to Combat Deepfake and Revenge Pornography

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the “Take It Down” Act, aimed at protecting Americans from deepfake and revenge pornography. In a decisive vote of 409 to 2, lawmakers approved the bill, which enhances protections for victims of non-consensual sharing of sexual images, including those generated by artificial intelligence. The legislation now heads to President Donald Trump for his signature.

First Lady Melania Trump has actively supported the bill, lobbying House lawmakers last month. Celebrating the bipartisan passage, she stated, “Advancing this legislation has been a key focus since I returned to my role as First Lady this past January.” A White House official confirmed that she will be present when the president signs the bill into law.

The legislation targets the publication of non-consensual intimate imagery, including AI-generated content, and mandates that social media platforms implement procedures to remove such material upon victim notification. Notable figures, including celebrities and young girls, have been victims of these malicious online practices.

The bill initially passed in the Senate in February with significant bipartisan support, spearheaded by Republican Senator Ted Cruz and supported by lawmakers like Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative Madeleine Dean. Melania Trump's support aligns with her previous "Be Best" campaign, which highlighted the importance of online safety, particularly for young people facing the dangers of deepfake technology.
