New Delhi’s air quality hit more than 16 times higher than the daily safe limit set by the World Health Organization on November 10, 2021. Every winter, tens of thousands of farmers in states bordering Delhi flout laws to clear their fields by burning leftover straw to make way for new crops, a process otherwise known as stubble burning. The annual practice spews toxic smoke into the air, alongside car and factory emissions, further worsening pollution in the Indian capital, which has been rated the world’s most polluted capital.
