UNEMPLOYMENT | 5 Tips to Survive
Have you recently been furlough or laid off? In this video I am going to share with you my 5 tips for surviving unemployment.
Tip #1 - Create an unemployment Budget: Cut back on your expenses and purchases that you do not necessarily need to live. That could mean going out to eat, different subscriptions, or any extracurricular activities. Find places where you know you can trim your expenses, this will help you during your unemployment stretch.
Tip #2 Apply for Unemployment Benefits : Apply as soon as you are laid off! Unemployment Benefits are handled at the state level. So make sure you contact your state labor department to find out how to apply and file for unemployment.
Also, if you do not want to figure out your state labor department here is a link that will take you to the necessary page - https://www.careeronestop.org/LocalHelp/UnemploymentBenefits/Find-Unemployment-Benefits.aspx
Tip #3 Update your resume and LinkedIn: Make sure once you know that a layoff is coming tat you start to update your resume & LinkedIn. Take your job description and start to implement the bullet points that you did on the job, into your resume/LinkedIn. Make sure you are highlighting your successes/accomplishes so they stand out for your future employer.
Tip #4 Work a Side Gig or Side Hustle: It is not necessary, but getting a side gig to earn additional income can really help stretch out your unemployment benefits. Just remember to claim how much income you made for the week when filing for unemployment benefits. Some Side Gigs/Hustles that are possible for you: Part time job - grocery store, hardware store
Driver for Uber/Lyft
Postmates, Uber eats, or Eatstreat
Start a blog/podcast/Youtube channel
Dog walking/pet sitting - Wag or Rover
Baby Sitting
Cleaning Houses
Designing logos/banners - fiverr international
Tip #5 Apply Every Day: The more you apply the higher the percentage of getting a new job. Staying unemployed and having a gap in your resume isn't the worst thing because you can tell a story about it. But you need to try and apply at least to 1 job a day. Also when filing for unemployment you typically need to show that you are actively looking for a job. So remember to save some of the jobs you apply for to show unemployment you are trying!
The websites I like to use for applying for jobs are:
LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/
Glassdoor - https://www.glassdoor.com/
Indeed - https://www.indeed.com/
Applying for jobs is tedious and annoying, it took me over 130 applications from the last time I was laid off before I got my next job. But remember to just stick to it and you will come out of it!
