The irony of hyper correction…
A common phenomenon amongst people in Utah is to avoid speaking with what they perceive to be an Utah accent. A misconception that many in the state have is that the glottal stop of the letter “t” in words like mountain, kitten, and button, is entirely unique to them, when in reality it is almost universal across the 50 states.
Many chose to change their pronunciation (pronouncing clearly the “t” in mounTain, kiTTen, buTTon, etc.) which ironically makes them sound less standard and identifies them more easily as Utahns.
