Restoring the Big Boy - Visiting the Cheyenne Roundhouse

We visit the Cheyenne Roundhouse to see the progress on the Union Pacific "Big Boy", the worlds largest steam locomotive. The Cheyenne Roundhouse is home to the Union Pacific Heritage Fleet of steam locomotives, including the newly rebuilt 844.

No. 844, the Living Legend, returned to service in 2016 to pull the Cheyenne Frontier Days special and then journeyed to Memphis for the grand opening of Big River Crossing! Meanwhile, work continues to restore the Big Boy, No. 4014.

Union Pacific Railroad is undertaking the movement and restoration of one of the world’s largest steam locomotives – the Big Boy No. 4014. The locomotive is expected to move in Spring 2014 from Colton, Calif., to Cheyenne, Wyo., where it will undergo restoration that is anticipated to take three to five years.
