How to Set Brush Hog Tail Wheels
I took one look at the brush hog and could tell there was a problem. With it set at a mowing height of 4 1/2", it was headed "uphill", in other words, it was higher in the front than the back. Unless you're cutting in reverse, you don't want that (most of the time). That's because you're going to cut the material, throw it forward, and then cut it again and again. It's like having a mulching lawn mower, but in high weeds like a lot of us cut with a brush hog, it'll take a lot of horsepower, really "work" the tractor, and burn a lot of fuel. We want the back end of the cutter higher than the front so the cut material goes out the back. In this video I discuss how to fix the problem.
First we need to determine what "rake" we want from back to front and the owner's manual will tell you that. I tend to go at the top end of the range they recommend. So, if the manufacturer says to have a 1-2" difference between the back and front, I'll be at 2". To get there, you'll need to decide how high you want to cut. I want to cut at 4 1/2". The skid plates on the bottom of the cutter are 1" below the blades, so to get to 4 1/2" cutting height, I need the skid plates set at 3 1/2". If you want the back 2" higher than that then it would be 5 1/2". I had planned to cut blocks to set the machine on, but I didn't have to. A 2 X 4 is 3 1/2" wide and a 2 X 6 is about 5 1/2" wide. So, I sat the machine on a couple of 2 X 4's on their edge on the front, and 2 X 6's on their edge on the back. That's what I want the machine to look like in the field. Sure enough, the tail wheels were a couple of inches off the ground.
All I had to do then, was to unbolt the tail wheel brackets and reattach them in different holes so they were flat on the ground. After tightening everything up, I'm ready to go to the field.
Most of the time, your cutter's rake will be set from the factory and you don't have to tweak it, but if you notice brush hogging is taking a lot of power and using a lot of fuel, make sure you're not cutting uphill.
