The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Exactly 10 years ago I sat the world’s most difficult wine-tasting exam in order to become a Master of Wine and today I want to check whether I still got it. I asked Leon to go through past exam papers, pick out some questions and order the same wines as in the Master of Wine exam …
In 1953 the first Master of Wine exam was held in London and out of the 21 people who took it 6 passed. Today this terrible pass rate would actually be pretty high as the exam is notoriously difficult.
This is one of the reasons why there are only 414 Masters of Wine on this planet. The most challenging task for most students is the tasting exam where you have to identify 36 wines blind on three exam days.
On each exam day, you have 12 wines in front of you and you have to write answers about the wines' grape variety, origin, quality, commercial appeal, vintage, maturity, and so on.
Needless to say – you have to be very well prepared to pass this exam and I was at the top of my game when I sat down in the exam room. Regardless, you feel the nerves as the pressure is enormous and I have seen people give up, cry, or storm off during the exam week. Today, I will do an exam “light”: 6 Wines …. But this is still going to be challenging as I am not really prepared for that.
