Wine scores are widely criticized in the world of wine – even people I respect hate them. I would argue that scoring wine is a successful practice because it is very useful – but I know that this is not a popular opinion. But before we get into the nitty-gritty let’s back up a little and talk about the history of scoring in the wine world. Even though we often talk about wine ratings as a pretty recent phenomenon it has been around for a long time vineyards have been scored for centuries. The Marquis of Pombal established a system to rate vineyards for the Port wine production in the mid 18th century. We all know the Classification of 1855 where wineries are rated in 5 different categories and you also know the Burgundy classification where vineyards are put into 4 different categories with 1er Cru and Grand Cru at the top.
Scoring wines took off though when one person entered the scene: Robert Parker. Robert Parker was a lawyer and then became the most influential wine critic in the world. He started his publication The Wine Advocate in 1978 and in addition to writing tasting notes and articles about wine and regions added a score to the wine. Robert Parker introduced the 100 point score that is today the international standard for scoring wines.
