Hello, this is Ellie, and she would like to confess something. She doesn’t expect that she’ll feel better after this, and honestly, she doesn’t think she deserves to anyway, but maybe she can at least prevent somebody else from repeating her mistake.
Everything started on the first day of her junior year in high school. She was happy to finally see her classmates and friends again after the long summer vacation. You could say that she was pretty popular – she did have a lot of friends. During her lunch break, she spotted a new guy in the school yard. Well, it was hard not to notice him – he was tall, had messy blonde hair, and...he had a cane. She remembers that moment, when she thought to herself: “what a nice-looking guy, too bad he has to walk around with that stick.” She asked her friends about him, and they said he wasn’t a new student. It turns out that he had studied at home for the last two years because of a serious bone fracture. Apparently, he had started feeling better and returned to school. They said his name was Nate.

Days, weeks, and even months flew by. But for some reason she couldn't get Nate out of her head, not for a single day. And from the way he looked at her whenever they crossed paths, she knew he was thinking about her too. There was something very special about Nate, something that made him stand out from the rest of the guys. While they would fool around during the breaks between classes, he would normally just sit with a book or do his homework. Ellie admired his maturity, but she couldn’t understand why he didn’t try to talk to her. After all, he wasn’t all that shy, at least that’s how it seemed.

Sometimes, she imagined that they'd somehow collide in the school hallway, and following the best traditions of silly romantic comedies, he would drop a book and they would both simultaneously reach out for it, their hands would touch and then...well...But in actual fact, everything turned out even better than that.

One of their friends had a huge birthday party, and Nate and Ellie were among those invited. Shortly after the party started, some of the guests gathered around the birthday girl in the living room, while others were playing board games in the kitchen. But she went to the balcony to get some fresh air because it was too stuffy inside, and the music was a little too loud. Nate must have noticed her disappearance, because he soon came out onto the balcony as well. Surprisingly, there was no one else there...just the two of them. They chatted a little but soon there was an awkward pause hanging in the air. She turned to Nate, and realized they were so close that their faces were almost touching. He didn’t miss this opportunity, and kissed her. And that night they started dating. She was thrilled!

The next day she told her friends what had happened. But she wasn’t expecting the reaction she got from them. They started telling her that she had made a mistake, and that she shouldn’t be dating him. She tried to convince them that Nate was such a kind and loving person, but they wouldn’t listen. They kept insisting that dating a disabled person was extremely tough and that she deserved better. Of course, she didn’t change her mind just like that because of what they’d said. But the worst thing was that she started questioning her feelings toward Nate.

On the one hand, they rapidly became very attached to each other within the space of a week. On the other, her friends were putting more and more pressure on her, trying to force her to break up with Nate. They would talk to her about it in school, text her on the way home, and even call her in the evening. It was too much to handle. She was weak, and Nate wasn’t. She genuinely respected him for the way he coped with his ailment. She never heard Nate complain about his injured leg or ask for help. In fact, she believed he would never have accepted help from anybody, even if he needed it. You know, Nate never showed any weaknesses. So, when she finally got the courage and told him that they needed to break up, the expression on his face remained absolutely tranquil, and he didn’t even ask her why. He just smiled sadly and walked away. Her friends were happy for Ellie, but she felt terrible.

One day, Nate didn’t show up at school, and she got worried. She called and texted him several times, but he didn’t answer. She asked his friends if they had seen him, but none of them had. About an hour later the principal came into their class. He looked devastated. It was clear something terrible had happened. Her heart sank like a stone, but she tried to drive away bad thoughts...
