This is Becky, and her story is a little embarrassing, because…well…her dad has always been a loser, for like, as long as she’s known him.

Becky always knew that there was something unbalanced about her family. Her mom was the “man of the house.” She was in charge of everything, and her dad would never argue with her. Her mom was also the main breadwinner. Her dad, on the other hand, never had a normal full-time job. Instead, he would do odd jobs, mostly involving car repairs. Apparently, it didn’t pay all that much and her mom argued with him a lot about that. Over time her mom’s constant criticism became unbearable even for Becky. It might sound like her mom was some kind of monster, but she didn’t blame her, because she knew she was burning the candle at both ends trying to pay the bills. But she still couldn’t stand it when she scolded her dad, so usually she just left the house and went to hang out with her friends when it happened. Becky looked different back then: purple hair, dark clothes, piercings. She can now say for sure that she was in bad company. The problem was about their mind set. Her friends didn’t care much about anything, some of them even dropped out of school. And the worst thing was that she was becoming just like them. She started skipping classes and having problems with other students.

One day, when her mom was nagging her dad as usual, he just flipped, grabbed his belongings (not a whole lot, really) and walked out of the house. At first, both Becky and her mom assumed he would come back eventually. But time passed, and her dad didn’t come back. She felt really sorry for him because she knew he wouldn’t make it on his own. But the thing was that he didn’t even try! He filed for unemployment benefits and rented a tiny apartment next to her school. After that, she felt miserable, especially when she saw her neighbors’ and classmates’ fathers with their careers, hobbies, aspirations. Whereas her was sitting on his couch watching TV all day and night. It seemed like he was totally apathetic, and something needed to be done. But what?

Her mom also had a hard time, since she had to support their small family all by herself. Becky decided that she had to help, and started searching for a part-time job. But it turned out that no one wanted to hire a sort of goth-looking high school girl. She applied to a whole load of places, but time after time she wouldn't get the job. She had almost lost hope when she noticed a busy coffee place not far from home. Surprisingly, the owner didn’t look down on her. He just said that she would have to dress more appropriately if she wanted the job. So, she changed her hair back to black and swapped her eccentric clothes for a more classy look. She was so happy that she would be able to help her mom!

She actually took her work uniform with her to school, because right after classes she had to go quickly to the coffee shop to work. She started off as a dishwasher/kitchen helper. It was boring, but she was kind of ready for it to be that way. But in less than a month, she was promoted and became a waitress. Things have gotten more fun since then. There were always customers in the coffee shop, which meant there was always some work for her to do. And it was great because she liked the atmosphere there. Also, her boss was an incredibly kind, calm person, and smart, too.

Because of her tight schedule, she didn't really have time left for her friends. She felt bad about it, and texted them a few times asking them to forgive her and telling them to come in and have some coffee. But they didn’t even reply. None of them! She realized they were not really her friends. At about the same time she started doing much better in school. Her boss even encouraged her to save half her paycheck for college.

But the most significant event in the past few months happened yesterday, when she was over at her dad’s place. They were watching a show on TV, and the show host asked a little girl: “Who do you want your future husband to be like?” and the girl replied, “Like my daddy.” When her dad turned to her and asked the same question, smiling, she hesitated. He clearly expected her to say something similar to what that little girl had said. But she just couldn’t. At that moment her dad sank into deep thought. She didn’t mean to hurt him, but at the same time she couldn’t lie to him. But just when she was about to stand up her dad raised his head, looked at her and said: “I get it now.” For some reason, for the first time, she believe him. Becky loves her dad no matter what, and hopes his life will improve like hers has.
