34028 "Eddystone" emerges from Herston Works - Swanage Railway 26/04/2021

After 7 years out of service, 34028 "Eddystone" has emerged from Herston Works folloing the completion of its latest overhaul.

34028 was withdrawn from service in August 2014, marking the end of it's first stint of service in preservation. A year was spent idle on the Swanage Railway, while its owners - Southern Locomotives Ltd - focused on the overhaul of 34072 "257 Squadron". "Eddystone" subsequently ventured to the South Devon Railway, where the boiler was lifted for overhaul, with the chassis carrying onward to Tyseley for the overhaul of the Axle-boxes.

34028's chassis entered Herston Works following the completion of 34072, for major overhaul work to commence. Now, as a complete locomotive once again, "Eddystone" emerged into the sunlight from the Works, almost 7 years after withdrawal. The Bulleid pacific looking immaculate in its BR Green livery; 34028 stands testement to the tireless dedication and hard work demonstrated by all those involved in its overhaul - not least the volunteers and staff of Southern Locomotives Ltd.

Once 34028 graced the metals of the Swanage Railway, the same low-loader would take 34072 back to Herston Works. "257 Squadron" is going in for a mechanical check-up, and subsequent repairs - including a front bogie swap.
