US extends temporary protection to hundreds of thousands Venezuelan migrants
The Biden administration has announced a shift in policy this week by granting Temporary Protected Status to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans already in the US.
On Wednesday, US Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced the 18-month extension for Venezuelans residing in the US before July 31.
“The conditions in their home country prevent their safe return,” Mayorkas said.
“However, it is critical that Venezuelans understand that those who have arrived here after July 31, 2023, are not eligible for such protection, and instead will be removed when they are found to not have a legal basis to stay,” he said.
The decision to extend Temporary Protected Status will also allow Venezuelans already living in the US to apply for work authorisation.
