Walking the Pieterpad North 🇳🇱 | Days 20 & 21 – Coevorden to Schoonloo | 400km & Toos Monument

I’m continuing my northbound journey on the Pieterpad, the most famous long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands — 500 km from Maastricht to Pieterburen.

After a 3-month summer break, I’m back on the trail with my dog Frodo, hiking Day 20 (Coevorden → Noord-Sleen, 24 km) and Day 21 (Noord-Sleen → Schoonloo, officially 20 km, but I walked about 23 km).

Day 20 is a bit monotonous, with long stretches along roads — tough with cars passing and Frodo jumping at each one! Still, the last kilometers bring quieter paths and a sense of reward at the end of a long day.

Day 21 is more varied and full of history: a hunebed (ancient tomb), a WWII memorial for a 1943 plane crash, and the Galgenberg, a prehistoric burial mound later used as an execution site.
The highlight, though, is the Pieterpad Monument for Toos, one of the two women who created this iconic Dutch trail — a touching tribute to the “Founding Mothers” of the Pieterpad.

I also reach a big milestone: 400 km on the Pieterpad!
Light rain in the afternoon, but nothing could dampen the satisfaction of another two stages completed.
