Mussorgsky-Stokowski 'Khovanchina' Proms Encore (1966)
"Beautiful silence!" said Leopold Stokowski, as he quietened the tumultuous applause after a stunning performance of Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony at the 1966 Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall. He told the audience what a great pleasure it was to conduct at the Proms and said that they were the most enthusiastic audience he'd ever visited. After a joke with one of the front-row Prommers, he then played the Act 4 Entr'acte from Mussorgsky's "Khovanchina." Although Stokowski hoped to conduct another Prom the following year, it wasn't to be, so this was his last Proms appearance. Also on the programme was the Liszt 1st Piano Concerto with Charles Rosen, previously uploaded here, with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. (From the broadcast of 10 September 1966.)
