Tips for painting snow #art #watercolourist

Painting snow!
It’s wonderful to see how light and time of day affects the colour of shadows in snow. The proximity of the sun to the horizon, the warmth of light, how close an object (a tree, person, barn, sheep) is to the ground, how wide, how translucent (the shape that is casting the shadow) all affect the value, density of the shadow as well as the transparency and of course colour (s)

my favourite combinations include Prussian blue, dioxazine Violet, ultramarine blue (usually in a red shade) and sometimes even as bright as Phthalo blue.

The whites of the snow will also change with the warmth of the light, so keep this in mind. The wider, the shape, the more it will block light and the denser the shadow will be meaning the less transparent, especially in the center. Soft shadows on snow (cast from distant shapes) tend to have much softer edges.
