Velamentofex saxonensis

This specimen of Velamentofex saxonensis is a freshwater foraminifer. I found it in a mesotrophic pond in the Netherlands. It is hidden in an empty alga cell. It is fragile, its size about 50 µm when spherical, with a hyaline membranous test with a single aperture. From a long pseudopodial peduncle some long branching and anastomosing granuloreticulopodia radiate in all directions. The cytoplasm is in continuous streaming, with many small granules, typical bi-refringent yellowish crystal-like bodies, globules, food vacuoles and nuclei. Nuclei are hard to detect, but spherical, 10 µm in diameter, each with some peripheral nucleoli and a central one.
We described this species in 2020.
