Aylesbury Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 40 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Aylesbury.

The name 'Aylesbury' derives from 'Aegel's burgh', with 'Aegel' presumably being the name of a local Saxon and 'burgh' meaning fortified settlement. During the Middle Ages Aylesbury was a large farming community with a weekly market and, from the 13th century, two annual fairs.

Aylesbury played a key role in the English Civil War. John Hampden, the Member of Parliament for Buckinghamshire from 1640-1643, opposed the arbitrary taxes imposed by Charles I. His attempted arrest in 1642 sparked the outbreak of the war. The Battle of Aylesbury took place later that year at Holman's Bridge, a few miles north of Aylesbury itself, with the Parliamentarian forces ending up victorious. Hampden died of wounds sustained in battle the following year, thus not living to see the execution of Charles I or the subsequent atrocities committed by his cousin, Oliver Cromwell.

A statue of John Hampden stands on Market Square. Directly opposite is a statue of Benjamin Disraeli. Disraeli was the MP for Buckinghamshire in the mid 19th century, and later on, Prime Minister, serving two separate terms.

Industry in Aylesbury goes back to the 15th century with the milling of flour. Other early industries included lace, clock making and needle making. Aylesbury was connected to the Grand Union Canal in 1814, giving it transportation links to London and Birmingham. The first railway connection came in 1839, leading in increased industry and population growth.

During the 20th century two companies employed more than half of the town - namely Nestlé dairy and printing and bookbinding company, Hazell, Watson and Viney. Their factories have since been demolished.

Aylesbury has a rich musical heritage courtesy of the Friars' Club. Founded in 1969, Friars has hosted musical artists that include Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Cream, Otis Redding, The Clash, Queen, Genesis and David Bowie to name a few. Bowie debuted his Ziggy Stardust persona in Aylesbury, and also referenced Market Square in the song Five Years. A statue of David Bowie was unveiled on Market Square in 2018, which can be seen in the video. Also, for any Marillion fans, the song Market Square Heroes is in reference to Aylesbury as well - the town where the band formed in 1979.
