The Face of Isabella of Angouleme (Artistic Reconstruction)

Project requested by: Vonkvetch, Hugh Lusignan, Korivassilyou Xena, Mary Louise & #Walkaway C

Born 1186/1188 - Died 4 June, 1246. Isabella of Angouleme (pronounced "Ahn-goo-lemm") was the famed wife of King John I of England and mother to King Henry III of England.

ARTIST NOTES: This is one of those rare cases where a historical description is a better hint of someone’s appearance than a painting (of which there were little to none, save the famous effigy in Fontevraud Abbey). Isabella caught the eye of John I with her blue-eyed, blonde-haired beauty which caused her to be described as the "Helen of the Middle Ages".

Helen of Troy, though a figure of Greek Mythology, was reputed to be the most beautiful woman in the world whose skin had a divine glow (a daughter of Zeus would have nothing less!). Considering that the medieval female ideal had pale skin, long golden hair, high forehead, plucked or faint eyebrows, and long neck, it only required a few cues from the effigy and from a standard bust of Helen of Troy to assemble a possible likeness.
