'Cacophonous Mind' by Ronan
Ronan won third prize with composition 'Cacophonous Mind', in the Digital Media category for Guildhall Young Artists competition, 'RELEASE'.
Ronan, Age 8 says: "I play piano. I love sound because I see with my ears. This piece is called Cacophonous Mind. It sounds like my mind because I hear music everywhere, all the time. I want people to feel excitement and connection to their body when they listen.
I used a tactile mixing board to write down what I hear in my head. I recorded my favourite sounds around the house to make the rhythm track. They are shape sorter, tap, and microwave. I improvised at the piano while listening to the rhythm track. I chose my favourite motifs and I made variations. I added them to my tactile mixing board. I like composing very much, because I express myself."
In March 2021, all 1,600 students who access a Saturday music school across the Guildhall Young Artists network, including Junior Guildhall and the Centres for Young Musicians, were invited to submit a composition to four categories: Songwriting, Digital Media, Music to Picture and Concert Music. As well as cash prizes for the top 3 compositions in each category, participants could also win other prizes including an online masterclass with an industry leading artist.
Ronan attends Saffron Centre for Young Musicians, which is part of Guildhall Young Artists.
