ABSTRACT:

The research on renewable energy sources and technologies are becoming increasingly vital to a sustainable world. As the Energy and Catalysis Adventure Team (ECAT), our mission is to provide solutions for a new framework to support sustainable development for the future. Simulating the natural photosynthesis, thereby constructing artificial leaves to realize the utilization of sunlight, water, and CO2 to produce fuels (solar fuels), is an effective strategy to realize this goal. At Tianjin University, the ECAT led by Prof. Jinlong Gong has put forward a series of new ideas for the synthesis of solar fuels based on addressing key scientific problems such as the improvement of the driving force of the photoelectrochemical reaction, the regulation of the reaction path on the catalyst surface, and the configuration optimization of artificial leaves, etc. In this talk, Prof. Jinlong Gong will specifically discuss the research progress of the ECAT team in the field of artificial photosynthesis. Their findings are helpful to the establishment of a sustainable development goal based on solar fuels.

BIOGRAPHY:

Jinlong Gong is a Cheung Kong Chair Professor of the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology in Tianjin University and the director of International Joint Research Center of Energy Chemical Engineering of Tianjin. He is a known expert in the field of energy chemical engineering and heterogeneous catalysis. Prof. Gong’s major fields of research includes artificial photosynthesis, alkane activation as well as conversion of carbon oxides. The ECAT team he leads has provided new strategies for the future energy framework. Based on artificial photosynthesis, the upgrading of CO2 to value-added multicarbon chemicals and the green production of hydrogen are realized. By pushing forward the development of new catalysts, breakthroughs in propane dehydrogenation to propylene are achieved. He has published more than 270 papers with a citation of over 20000 times and an H-index of 75. He has been listed as a co-inventor on 95 patents and applications.
