Bucket List: Black Hills Big Thunder Gold Mine Claim Panning

If you've ever wanted to be a gold miner, here's a glimpse at a half-day claim panning excursion we took into the Black Hills National Forest in autumn. Big Thunder Gold Mine offers everything from mine tours to half and full day panning outfits of various degrees. We had a great time, worked hard, and came home with some flakes of gold as well as other gemstones. If you plan to be a gold "panner" for a day, be aware that you WILL get dirty, and you WILL get wet. This is not a handicap accessible excursion, and includes a half-mile, overland hike in to the claim along the Battle Creek.

This adventure was made possible by NTF's "Aunt Sharyn", who gave Calvin a half-day panning for family of 4 for his 10th birthday!

For the record, South Dakota still has a shoot-on-site law in it's books for claim jumpers, so be sure you steer clear of mineral claims in the Black Hills!
