Would Steven Seagal beat Jean Claude Van Damme in a fight?

I keep hearing people compare the martial skills of various artist, and this gets to be annoying. I don't know why we in America adopt this attitude of trying to out stage others in various fields of endeavor. Why can't we just be happy with our own individual accomplishments, without trying to degrade that of others?
This should be especially true in the martial arts. After all, it's not suppose to be about ego, but about developing one's character.
