I have some thoughts on this one… Manatees in Flordia!

First things first: I went on a small group kayaking/swim tour which included training and instruction on how to avoid disturbing the manatees during the activity. This is really a must as not all tours take the same care to observe from a distance. Of course, manatees do have a mind of their own, so you might end up right near one (as I did), but it should not be your intention to swim up to and interact with a manatee.

Despite my bad luck with the clarity of the water, this was still a really unique experience that I would recommend, just with a couple tips: 📅Go on a random weekday and choose the earliest tour to have the best chance of clear water. Even if it’s cold, you will have a wetsuit so you’ll be ok! 🗓️Manatee season is November - April, but booking mid-December through February was recommended as the best time by my tour guide. 🙋🏼‍♀️Pick the right tour. There are large(er) group tours that go via boat, but these can be quite disruptive. Opt to go on a small group kayak & swim tour with a reputable brand. 🚣Kayaking is also an option! If swimming with the manatees is not your style, you can choose to kayak only and see them from above! Also, I am not sure what happened to this poor manatee’s back. The guide said it could’ve been a boat but that they also often injure themselves trying to get barnacles and whatnot off their back 😢 Would you swim with the manatees? 📸 at beginning: Discover Crystal River Florida
