Fishan's Journey to Recovery - April 2020
Fishan has stolen many of our hearts over the past 18 months.
In 2018, he fractured his front left leg by walking into a deep hole. We had a four-tonne challenge, and Adine, our veterinary and elephant care team took it head-on, with love and commitment.
His 18-month rehabilitation and recovery have been quite miraculous. It took a lot of hard work, time and team effort, but Fishan persevered and survived the odds.
He is getting stronger and stronger and can use his leg much more, kicking soil and swinging it just like the other elephants. 💦 He swims a lot these days as it likely has a positive effect on his healing. Tokwe, the Matriarch was very concerned and protective over him after his injury and always remained close to him. So too, did our amazing carers, who read to him and kept him company during the four months he could not join the herd when foraging in the bush during the day.
If Fishan inspires you, please consider fostering him to help with the ongoing responsibility of elephant care during the global travel lockdown. You stand a chance to win a stay at Jabulani ~ with a 3 night stay for 2 people sharing!

Fishan’s lesson ~ Never give up, no matter the odds. 🤩
Fishan, meaning 'something smaller', was born in approximately 1989 and was rescued from Zimbabwe with the rest of the herd in 2002.
Personality:
He is a sensitive soul that stresses easily, although his seemingly carefree demeanor often fools one. He is a very smart elephant who doesn't forget easily. 🤓 He is also very independent and is usually the elephant that will take an alternative route, just to be different. But he never intends to offend anyone with his actions.
He shares his quarters of the stable with Tokwe, the matriarch, and the younger elephants and as a very protective figure, he helps Tokwe look after the calves.
Physical Traits:
Fishan is tall, but slender with shorter tusks and a smaller head compared to other elephant bulls of a similar age. He has a slight limp due to his leg injury.
