Westminster Debates Year of the Dad
On 1st March 2017 MPs gathered in Westminster Hall to debate the role of Fathers in the Family.
The motion was initiated by Neil Gray, MP for Airdrie and Shotts, who wanted to reflect on Scotland's Year of the Dad in 2016 and encourage a similarly positive initiative across the UK.
The lively debate attracted rare consensus across party and gender lines, with MPs agreeing on the importance of fathers' caring role and its positive impact on children, families, gender equality and society as a whole.
With Anne Main chairing, the following MPs contributed: Neil Gray (SNP, Airdrie & Shotts), Andrew Smith (Lab, Oxford East), Ranil Jayawardena (Con, North East Hampshire), David Lammy (Lab, Tottenham), Steve Double (Con, St Austell & Newquay), Simon Danczuk (Ind, Rochdale), Andrew Selous (Con, SW Bedfordshire), Suella Fernandes (Con, Fareham), David Burrowes (Con, Enfield Southgate), Gavin Newlands (SNP, Paisley & Renfrewshire N), Drew Hendry (SNP, Inverness Nairn Badenoch & Strathspey), Angela Crawley (SNP Lanark & Hamilton East), Paula Sherriff (Lab, Dewsbury) and Caroline Dinenage (Con, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Women and Equalities).
