"I’m 15 years old and I’m a self-taught artist. I have always been interested in art, but it was only a year ago when I started creating. I’ve realized that creating, is one of the best ways for me to cope with stress, which I experienced a lot last year.

I believe the technique you’ve shown in the video is not only surprising, quick and effective, but also quite simple and it gives an artist the space for own expression. I also enjoyed playing with different colors and shades. I’ve decided to leave a strong contrast between the black background and bright face. I used a lot of different colors to express my inner-self and emotions. The cold, dark colors on the left side of my face represent my deeper personality, often not shown to the rest of the world, while the bright, warm shades represent characteristics and emotions, that I share with others."

Clara Lieu is an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.
