Helen Zille Condemns Donald Trump’s Hate Speech Toward Julius Malema: This Goes Beyond Politics

In a rare display of cross-party principle, Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chairperson Helen Zille has publicly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for what she calls “unacceptable and racially inflammatory hate speech” directed at Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema.

Zille’s remarks come in response to Trump’s controversial statement earlier this week, in which he referred to Malema as a “dangerous animal” and a “thug,” blaming the EFF leader for “ruining South Africa’s future” during a televised town hall in the U.S.

While political tensions between Zille’s DA and Malema’s EFF are well-documented, Zille drew a firm line between political disagreement and racial dehumanization.
In an official statement released Thursday morning, Zille said:

My political and ideological opposition to Julius Malema is no secret. We are often on opposite ends of the spectrum. But what Donald Trump said is beyond political rivalry — it is deeply racist, dehumanizing, and morally repugnant.”
Calling a Black African leader an ‘animal’ evokes centuries of racial oppression. It’s not just an insult to Julius Malema — it’s an insult to the entire African continent and its struggle for dignity.”
Zille also stressed that leaders in the Global North, especially former presidents, have a responsibility to use their platforms with care:

Words matter. Especially when they come from individuals who once held immense power. Hate speech from people like Trump reinforces harmful stereotypes and endangers real lives.

Zille’s firm condemnation has sparked a flurry of mixed reactions within her own party. While some praised her moral stance, others felt she was giving unnecessary validation to the EFF.

Zille is walking a fine line here. We all agree Trump crossed a line, but elevating Malema as a victim might blur the lines between rejecting racism and endorsing radical populism.
However, youth members of the DA and civil society leaders welcomed Zille’s statement, viewing it as a principled stand at a time when political leaders often default to silence.
