This Brave Cop Was The Alabama Sheriff Without A Gun
This is a short film that honors Tom Gilmore, one of the first Black Sheriffs in Alabama back in the 1970s. He became known as the sheriff without a gun. He never use one. Never carried one. And never ran into a situation where he could not defuse the situation with kind word and understanding. I got the chance to film him as part of a national television series that I was creating of three minute television infomercials (the days of corporate image) sponsored by Mobil Oil. I had the freedom to make these portraits my way using documentary style. Tom Gilmore was a beautiful human being who touched me deeply with his approach to the people he took care of in Greene County, Alabama, one of the poorest counties in the country.
