Matthews residents seek clarity on transit tax at packed forum

With early voting just a week away, residents packed Matthews Town Hall on Thursday seeking clarity on a proposed one-cent sales tax increase for transportation projects, as confusion and concerns about the measure persist.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Susan Rodriguez-McDowell organized the forum, titled "The Whole Story on the Transit Tax," after the Charlotte Area Transit System canceled a planned informational session last week.

"It's important to me that people get the whole story and get a really good idea of what is going to be on the ballot," Rodriguez-McDowell said. "For me, it's just really important to make sure folks get a well-rounded set of information."

Rodriguez-McDowell, who voted against placing the sales tax referendum on the November ballot, emphasized she was not advocating for or against the measure but wanted to combat what she described as widespread misinformation.
