Virginia officials are openly resisting Governor Abigail Spanberger's new gun laws set to take effect July 1. In Clark County, Sheriff Travis Sumpton and Commonwealth's Attorney Matthew Bass announced they will not immediately charge or prosecute nonviolent offenders for violations of the expanded restrictions on firearms, ammunition, magazines, and so-called assault weapons. Lynchburg Commonwealth's Attorney Bethany Harrison has joined the pushback, refusing to enforce the legislation, particularly the assault weapons ban.
These actions add to a growing list of Virginia jurisdictions—including Shenandoah, Warren, Page, Spotsylvania, and others—pushing back against what critics call a "gun grab" that impacts hunting rifles, shotguns, and law-abiding gun owners. Officials cite the U.S. Supreme Court, the Virginia Constitution, and longstanding local traditions of responsible firearms ownership.
Meanwhile, Rideout Arsenal, a Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania firearms manufacturer, is relocating to a $22 million facility in Thomasville, Georgia, citing the new laws as a key factor. As businesses and jobs leave Virginia for more business-friendly states, questions mount about Spanberger's "affordability agenda."
Uriah Kiser breaks down the latest developments, the constitutional arguments, the economic impact on Virginia families, and what this means for statewide politics heading into future elections.
