Closer co-ordination between our roads, railways and coastal shipping.

This video is another in the Look at Life Series from Volume 1: Transport.

In 1963, Britain was onto a Transport revolution. New motorways and bridges which spanned rivers and canals. Compared to the rest of Europe, Britain were late starters, but today 1000 miles of Motorways were either built or planned and part of a £100 million a year program needed to keep up with a hurrying world. By 1970 it was forecast that the number of cars would have doubled to some 13 million and by 1980 between 16 and 18 million

This video takes the viewer back almost 60 years to classic cars such as Ford Populars, Triumph Herald, Austin Cambridge, Vauxhalls, Ford Consuls, Morris Minor, Ford Cortina, Ford Anglia, Austin A35, Hillman Minx, Humber, Austin A40, Jaguar, plus a lot of others.

The Ports are also out of date and work is underway to find out how to make them more efficient.

Various Ships are seen in the King George V Dock in London including a Blue Star Line ship, plus the Manchester Ship Canal, Port of Liverpool. The Adventurer was a Harrison Line Cargo Ship built in 1960. Queen Elizabeth in Southampton Docks. Clan Malcolm of Clan Line - built in 1957 - 7,686 GRT, in 1979 sold to Panama and renamed Trinity Fair.

On the Railways, the same story - an archaic system, laid down by cheap labour in the Victorian Age. But now modernisation.

Various Steam trains and diesels are shown during the film, including the Midland Pullman, Diesel D6558.
