🌞 Solstice & ⛸ Skating on Ottawa River

At winter solstice, a stretch of the Ottawa River froze over with very smooth ice which afforded excellent skating conditions. This was a once in a blue moon happening. The mighty Ottawa River is some 3.5 km wide so it's a vast expanse of ice for skating.

It was a bit unnerving to be out on the living ice surface and hear the loud sounds of cracks spreading completely across the river. It sounded like a low-level jet airplane flying straight towards you and one could imagine being thrown into the freezing water where death by hypothermia would soon follow.

This was truly an amazing and unique way to welcome the winter solstice. __________________________________________________________________
